Why a Speedrun Route Is More Than a Shortest Path

A routing algorithm can search for the best path only after someone defines the rules: which moves are allowed, what counts as a cost, and what the destination is. In a speedrun, those rules may depend on details that are hard to capture in a simple map. A jump can skip a section; an unusual interaction can change where the character appears; a route that looks shorter may be harder to execute consistently.

So runners are not merely looking for the fewest turns. They are searching for a sequence of actions that finishes the game quickly and can actually be performed under its mechanics.

A Community Turns Small Experiments Into a Route

One runner might test whether a ledge can be reached with a particular jump. Another may notice that a detour saves time later, or find a way to make a risky maneuver more reliable. When those discoveries are shared, other players can test them, combine them, and refine the timing.

This is a kind of distributed search: many people explore different possibilities, often guided by close familiarity with the game. A tiny shortcut matters because it can be repeated across attempts, while an apparent improvement may be rejected if it is too difficult to execute reliably. The route evolves through experiments, comparisons, and practice rather than a single calculation.

What Algorithms May Be Missing

An algorithm can be extremely effective when the game state and objective are modeled accurately. But building that model is itself work. If a useful trick, hidden interaction, or practical constraint is absent from the model, the search cannot account for it. Human runners can notice such possibilities and communicate them before they are formalized.

The advantage is not that people always calculate faster than computers. It is that a community can expand the set of ideas being considered—and keep testing which ones survive real play. A speedrun route is therefore not just a line through a level; it is accumulated knowledge about what the game will let a player do.
