Historically finding your location using the stars sounds incredibly poetic until you actually have to hold the delicate brass instrument completely still. Trying to perfectly align a tiny mirror with a faint star while standing on a wooden deck aggressively violently pitching in the waves is an absolute nightmare of frustration.
