The founder of Neoplatonism was so resentful of having a biological form that he refused to let anyone paint his portrait or celebrate his birthday. He viewed his earthly existence as a humiliating cage trapping his brilliant intellect. Plotinus essentially lived his entire life apologizing for the unfortunate fact that he had to occupy space and consume food like a regular mortal.
