Forget waiting for January first; ancient Egypt functioned entirely around a single exceptionally bright star. When Sirius appeared on the horizon just before sunrise, it perfectly predicted the life-giving annual flooding of the Nile River. Their whole society was essentially operating on a massive, watery astrological clock that dictated when they could farm and when they would starve.
