To prevent corruption, the Venetian Republic devised an electoral system so bewilderingly complicated it basically relied on magic. It involved multiple rounds of drawing random balls from urns, whittling down committees, expanding them again, and repeating this tedious process until they were absolutely certain no one could have possibly rigged the outcome.
