A closer look
Charles Darwin was not just a groundbreaking biologist who formulated the theory of evolution, but also an adventurous eater who tried to consume almost every new exotic animal he discovered! While studying at Cambridge, he joined the Glutton Club, a dining society dedicated to eating strange birds and beasts that were completely unknown to the human palate. During his famous voyage on the HMS Beagle, he eagerly feasted on armadillos, pumas, and a completely unknown species of rhea bird that he only realized was scientifically significant after he had already eaten half of it. He even found giant tortoises so delicious that he struggled to bring live specimens back to England because the crew kept turning them into soup. Developing the foundational understanding of biology is great, but treating the Galapagos islands like an exotic buffet is iconic!
