Isaac Luria's midnight weeping for the Shekhinah

Waking up at midnight to sob on the floor was a core cosmic duty in 16th-century Safed. Lurianic Kabbalists practiced Tikkun Chatzot, a ritual mourning where they sat barefoot in the dark, weeping for the Shekhinah (the exiled feminine presence of God), believing their actual tears generated the spiritual energy needed to repair the broken world.
