Bungie didn't invent the concept of a massive habitable ring floating in space. They shamelessly lifted it from Larry Niven's 1970 sci-fi novel 'Ringworld.' The developers have openly admitted the massive inspiration. Of course, Bungie added heavily armored super soldiers and genocidal religious zealots to make it spicy, but the architectural blueprint is straight out of a 70s paperback.
