Financial analysts refuse to speak in normal percentages because it doesn't sound nearly sophisticated enough for their salaries. Instead, they invented basis points, a needlessly granular metric where one hundred units equal a single, measly percentage point. It allows them to report microscopic shifts in interest rates as massive, dramatic numeric swings.
