A closer look

You think you’re clicking through a simple dating simulator, but the game is quietly gathering intel on the person sitting behind the keyboard. Visual novels usually branch based on in-game dialogue choices, but Doki Doki Literature Club subverts this by attacking the game's file directory. During the climax, the character Monika stops addressing your in-game avatar and pulls your actual Windows OS username to speak directly to you. This breach of the game-engine environment turns a standard branching narrative into a hostage situation.
