A closer look
The ultimate icon of courage, wisdom, and power in the gaming universe is literally just a medieval family logo. The three glowing triangles were ripped straight from the 'Mitsuuroko' (three scales) crest of the Hojo clan, who ruled Japan in the 13th century. Nintendo didn't really try to hide this; they just slapped a golden coat of paint on a 800-year-old feudal trademark, tied it to a pointy-eared elf boy, and completely overwrote its historical significance for Western audiences.
