A closer look
Europe had already switched from the old Julian calendar to the more accurate Gregorian one. Britain resisted for religious and political reasons, until the date mismatch became impossible to ignore: traders, diplomats, and scientists were living in different 'todays'. The solution was brutal simplicity: after 2 September came 14 September, and the missing days were simply skipped.
Some people supposedly shouted 'Give us our eleven days', fearing stolen wages and shortened lives. Whether or not the riots were real, the anxiety was. The story is a reminder that even time is a political technology: every calendar silently decides who waits, who pays interest longer, and whose holidays fall on workdays.
