Hash collisions make different files look identical

HERE’S THE INTERESTING PART

Cryptographic hashes squeeze gigantic files down into short alphanumeric codes. Because the final code has a fixed length, math dictates that eventually, two entirely different files will randomly generate the exact same hash code. This mathematically inevitable glitch is called a 'Collision', and when hackers figure out how to force one, they can disguise malicious software as a legitimate update.
