Long before it became synonymous with tassels and stripteases, burlesque was an intellectual exercise in mockery. The genre began as theatrical parodies that aggressively made fun of the stuffy operas and classical works beloved by the rich. It eventually shifted into exotic dancing because, surprisingly, flesh sells better than witty literary critiques.
