Google's omnipresent mobile OS was originally designed for a product category that smartphones effectively murdered. In 2003, Andy Rubin and his team designed Android as a smart operating system for digital cameras to connect seamlessly to PCs. Realizing the camera market was already shrinking, they hastily pivoted to mobile phones just in time to get acquired by Google and go to war with Apple.
