A real cat inside a deliberately simple design
Nyan Cat’s absurdity depends on a clear silhouette: a cat flies through space with a pastry for a body, leaving a rainbow trail. The cat part was not drawn from an imaginary creature. Creator Chris Torres used his own Russian Blue, Marty, as the model.
That reference mattered in pixel art, where a few blocks of color have to do the work of fur, face, and posture. Rather than reproduce every detail of a real animal, the artist could reduce Marty to a compact, readable cat shape. The pastry and rainbow supplied the joke and motion; the familiar feline form kept the character immediately legible.
Why the personal reference stuck
The image’s unlikely combination is easy to remember, but its cat is not entirely anonymous. Marty gave Torres a real animal to observe while turning the idea into a small graphic. That link between an internet icon and an artist’s pet is part of the image’s origin—not a visual clue viewers need to recognize to understand the joke.
In other words, the character’s surreal setting was invented, but its central animal began with someone Torres knew well: his own cat.
