A closer look
Driving out into the desolate high desert just to look at dusty medicine bottles left behind by dead gold prospectors perfectly encapsulates the bizarre romanticism of the American West. Bodie is maintained in a state of 'arrested decay,' meaning buildings are preserved but never restored. In the 1870s, it was a booming, notoriously violent town with 65 saloons. When the gold dried up, people left everything behind, freezing the town's eerie history perfectly in place.
