A closer look
Gene Roddenberry’s original 1965 vision for space exploration was deemed 'too cerebral' by network suits, resulting in the original pilot, 'The Cage,' being locked away and cannibalized for parts. For decades, the full-color master was considered permanently lost media. It wasn't until the 1980s that archivists miraculously managed to reconstruct the episode by splicing a surviving black-and-white 16mm print owned by Roddenberry himself with random, unused color trims found in a Hollywood vault, proving hoarding occasionally saves television history.
