A closer look

During the catastrophic New Madrid earthquakes of 1811 and 1812, the seismic shockwaves were so violently powerful that they temporarily forced the mighty Mississippi River to reverse its flow. Flabbergasted boaters found themselves traveling violently upstream, undoubtedly questioning every life decision they had made up to that point.
