A closer look
First-generation Honda CR-Vs manufactured between 1997 and 2006 came standard with a folding plastic picnic table cleverly hidden beneath the carpet of the cargo area. The designers genuinely believed that the average buyer of a compact sport utility vehicle was going to spontaneously pull over in a scenic meadow to enjoy a delightful charcuterie board. In reality, most of these tables spent a decade marinating under spilled groceries, forgotten umbrellas, and dog hair, entirely undiscovered by the actual owners. It stands as a hilarious monument to the optimistic marketing of the late nineties, when automakers aggressively sold us the fantasy of an adventurous, outdoorsy lifestyle to distract us from the fact that we were just driving a glorified civic to the suburban strip mall!
