If you poke a small enough hole in a container, gases will treat it like an exclusive exit strategy. Effusion is the process where gas molecules randomly wander into a microscopic pinhole and escape into a vacuum without ever colliding with each other. Lighter molecules move faster, meaning they predictably leak out much quicker than their heavier, more sluggish counterparts.
