If the water is too cold, the fish obviously grow a thick winter coat. Pranksters created bizarre taxidermy fish covered in white rabbit fur and convinced tourists that these majestic creatures swam in the freezing rivers. People gladly believed that underwater creatures somehow evolved thick mammalian pelts just to stay cozy in the winter.
