Before mechanical presses, texts were often just continuous blocks of exhausting letters. As book production scaled up, operators realized that forcing readers to guess where sentences stopped was terribly inefficient. They heavily standardized dots and slashes to dictate breathing pauses, turning chaotic rivers of text into actually legible documents.
