Japanese melonpan contains no melon

HERE’S THE INTERESTING PART

If you bite into this massive pastry expecting a fruity explosion, you will be deeply disappointed. Melonpan translates to 'melon bread', but the name merely refers to the crispy, deeply scored cookie crust baked onto the top, which somewhat visually resembles the rind of a cantaloupe. It is essentially just sugar bread shaped like a lie.
