A closer look
When an entire sovereign nation needs to forge its resume to get into a prestigious economic club, they hire Wall Street. In the early 2000s, Greece desperately wanted to join the Eurozone but had way too much national debt to qualify. Goldman Sachs swooped in and designed complex financial derivatives—essentially magic accounting tricks—to temporarily mask billions in Greek liabilities. It worked perfectly, right up until the European debt crisis exposed the lie.
