Medieval sea wizards sold tied knots to control ocean winds

Sailing was scary, so sailors bought wind from witches. In Northern Europe, particularly Finland and Scotland, cunning folk and mystics sold sailors ropes tied with three specific magic knots. Untying the first knot supposedly unleashed a gentle breeze, the second a strong wind, and the third a hurricane. If it didn't work, well, no refund policy exists in the middle of a becalmed ocean.
