A closer look
You know you have a dedicated fanbase when they spend decades fluently speaking a language that started as an actor just making grunting noises on set. The Klingon language first appeared in 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' when James Doohan, the actor who played Scotty, simply ad-libbed some aggressive-sounding throat noises. It wasn't until 'Star Trek III' that producers hired linguist Marc Okrand to turn those random barks into a legitimate, grammatically complex language. Now, there are people who can casually order a coffee or translate Shakespeare in a dialect meant for fictional space warlords.
