Nepali telecommunications company Ncell installed a 3G mobile phone tower near the base camp of Mount Everest in 2010, and high-speed broadband internet was eventually established on the summit to assist climbers with weather updates and emergency communications. This incredible feat of engineering means that human beings can stand at the absolute highest, most inhospitable point on planet Earth, where the air is practically unbreathable and the temperature can freeze your corneas, and still have enough signal to post a selfie. It is profoundly depressing to realize that a mountain climber in the death zone has a more reliable internet connection than most people trying to stream a movie in the basement of their overpriced suburban apartment. At least when you reach the literal top of the world, you can comfortably ignore the majestic beauty of nature to check if your latest tweet got any likes
