Originating strictly as small, handheld rhythmic noisemakers, castanets rely entirely on the hollowed-out shape of the wood. When the two shells snap together rapidly via the thumb and fingers, the internal concave space amplifies the clicking sound. It requires terrifying finger dexterity just to avoid sounding like chattering teeth.
