A closer look
Even the greatest grandmaster in history thought standard chess was getting incredibly boring. Worried that the game would eventually suffer from 'draw death' where top players always tied, Jose Raul Capablanca invented a larger variant featuring 'fairy pieces.' He introduced the Archbishop (a knight-bishop hybrid) and the Chancellor (a knight-rook hybrid). These mutant pieces drastically expanded the tactical geometry of the board, accelerating lethality and making defensive stalemates nearly impossible.
