A streak turns a chat into a daily obligation
A messaging streak is a counter that grows when people exchange messages on consecutive days. The number makes an ongoing friendship visible in the app: miss a day, and the streak may reset. What could have been an occasional conversation can start to feel like a task with a deadline.
That changes the stakes of being unavailable. A teenager who is traveling, grounded, busy, or without a phone may worry that a missed check-in will erase a counter shared with a friend. The pressure is not necessarily about having something important to say; it can be about preserving the record of having shown up.
Password sharing is a workaround—and a tradeoff
Some teens give a friend their password so that person can send a message from the account while they are away. The friend is effectively standing in for the absent user, keeping the daily exchange—and the visible streak—going. In that sense, the counter has shifted the friendship ritual from “talk when you can” toward “make sure something is sent today.”
The workaround also hands another person access to the account, which may expose private messages or let them act as the account holder. That is a meaningful tradeoff for a small digital reward. The striking consequence is how a feature meant to celebrate consistency can make a number feel important enough that some teenagers trust a friend with the keys to their account.
