What an AI meeting double actually does
“Attending” can mean anything from replaying a short video loop of someone nodding to running an interactive agent that listens, speaks, and responds. The more capable version combines a visual avatar with software that processes the meeting’s audio, turns speech into text, and generates replies from instructions or information supplied by the person it represents. A voice model may then speak those replies, while animation makes the avatar appear to talk.
That chain matters: a convincing face is not the same as a capable stand-in. A prerecorded image can create the appearance of attention but cannot follow a changing discussion. An interactive system can react, yet its answers depend on what it has been told and what it can access. It may miss an implication, misunderstand a name, or answer beyond its authority.
The hard part is deciding what it may do
A useful delegate needs boundaries. It might be allowed to take notes, give a prepared update, or relay a person’s availability—but making commitments, answering sensitive questions, or improvising on behalf of a colleague raises the stakes. The system also needs a way to distinguish what it knows from what it is guessing. Without that, fluent speech can make uncertainty sound like confidence.
There is a social design choice, too: whether the avatar is clearly labeled as an AI and whether it says who it represents. If colleagues believe they are speaking directly to a person, they may share information or expect decisions that the person never heard. Disclosure helps set expectations, but it does not by itself solve the problem of who is responsible for a mistaken answer.
Presence is not participation
An avatar can keep a meeting moving when someone is unavailable, especially for routine updates. But a nod on screen is not evidence that a person is listening, agreeing, or consenting. The practical test is not whether the double looks real; it is whether everyone knows what it can do, what it cannot do, and when a decision must wait for the human behind it.
