The fatal flaw of telling ordinary people that true spiritual perfection requires doing absolutely nothing is that they will actually listen. When authorities realized peasants were using the doctrine of absolute passivity to skip mandatory church events, avoid heavy labor, and ignore strict religious laws, they panicked. The entire theological movement was violently condemned, primarily because an entirely relaxed, deeply apathetic workforce is a terrible outcome for the ruling authorities.
