Why October is named for the number eight

If you've ever wondered why 'October' means eight, 'November' means nine, and 'December' means ten despite being the 10th, 11th, and 12th months, blame the original Roman calendar. It literally only had ten months, leaving the dead of winter as an unassigned, nameless void of time before they finally got around to inventing January and February.
