When rock stars had to mime their own songs
Forcing rock stars to fake playing their instruments was a logistical necessity because 1964 television studios simply couldn't mix live bands. Thanks to strict union rules and terrible acoustics, 'Top of the Pops' made legendary musicians stand on stage and violently mime their own hit records, leading to decades of beautifully awkward, passive-aggressive televised performances.
