Why author photos are often a decade out of date

The person smiling at you from the inside flap of a hardcover book is a time traveler. Writers notoriously refuse to update their author photos, choosing instead to eternally present themselves as the youthful, heavily airbrushed individuals they were a full decade before the current novel was actually drafted.
