When society is too lazy to invent a brand-new word, it just crashes two existing ones together and hopes for the best. Smog is just smoke and fog. Brunch is just breakfast and lunch. It is an incredibly efficient linguistic recycling program that allows us to create terrible new terminology without doing any actual creative work.
