Snakes completely lack eyelids and instead protect their unblinking eyes with a transparent, specialized scale known as a brille or spectacle. This ocular scale acts as a permanent, built-in safety goggle that protects their corneas from dust and debris as they slither across the abrasive ground. Because they physically cannot blink, they even sleep with their eyes wide open, which only adds to their inherently menacing and deeply untrustworthy reputation.
