Sometimes literary immortality is born strictly out of petty gambling. Dr. Seuss’s publisher, Bennett Cerf, bet him $50 that he couldn't write an entire, coherent children's book using exactly 50 unique words. Seuss took the challenge, wrote the masterpiece, and naturally, Cerf allegedly never actually paid him the fifty bucks.
