Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989 while working at CERN in Switzerland, primarily as a tool for scientists to easily share academic research documents across different institutional computers. He famously released the source code for free without patenting it, ensuring the web remained an open platform for humanity rather than a tightly controlled corporate monopoly. Of course, his idealistic vision of a utopian digital library for scholarly enlightenment has predictably degenerated into a sprawling casino of cat memes, targeted advertising algorithms, and strangers arguing aggressively with anonymous anime avatars. It must be incredibly weird to invent the most transformative communication medium in human history and watch it slowly mutate into a platform where teenagers perform synchronized dances to sell energy drinks while democratic elections are casually manipulated in the background
