You’d think the inaugural image of the World Wide Web would be something profound, like a scientific diagram or a historic monument. Instead, in 1992, Tim Berners-Lee uploaded a terrible quality JPEG of Les Horribles Cernettes, an all-female parody pop band made up of CERN employees. The internet's legacy as a delivery system for goofy entertainment was literally hardcoded into its very first pixelated image.
