Hollywood loves to pat itself on the back for progress, but when Hattie McDaniel became the first Black person to win an Academy Award in 1940, the hypocrisy was blinding. She had to sit at a tiny, segregated table at the back of the Ambassador Hotel’s Coconut Grove club, completely separated from her white Gone with the Wind co-stars. The industry essentially handed her a historic golden statue while simultaneously treating her like a second-class citizen, cementing a masterclass in performative institutional irony.
