A closer look
Bugs Bunny was officially made an honorary private in the United States Marine Corps during the height of World War II after starring in a piece of animated propaganda. The cartoon rabbit was later legitimately promoted to the rank of Master Sergeant, which technically means a fictional, carrot-chewing woodland creature outranked thousands of actual human soldiers who were fighting and dying in muddy trenches. It perfectly highlights the bizarre nature of wartime morale tactics, where the government decided the best way to inspire their exhausted troops was to remind them that a cross-dressing cartoon rabbit was technically their commanding officer!
