A closer look

It is virtually impossible for a comfortable, healthy human to truly grasp the agonizing reality of suffering. The hot-cold empathy gap demonstrates that when we are in a 'cold' biological state—pain-free, fully rested, and emotionally calm—we arrogantly underestimate how severely intense 'hot' states like chronic pain, extreme hunger, or sheer panic will impact our behavior, making us incredibly unsympathetic to those currently enduring them.
