Giant factories eventually become too big to function

There is a tragic point where getting larger actually ruins a company. Diseconomies of scale kick in when a firm becomes so comically massive that departments stop talking to each other, managers spend all day in useless meetings, and efficiency completely collapses. It is the corporate equivalent of an overgrown empire collapsing under its own weight.
