HERE’S THE INTERESTING PART

The highly specific modern marathon distance of 26.2 miles was a completely arbitrary historical accident. Before it was standardized in 1921, the race distance heavily fluctuated based on whatever path the local organizers felt like mapping out. Sometimes you ran twenty-four miles, sometimes you ran twenty-six; you basically just stopped when they told you to.
