A closer look
Microsoft designer Vincent Connare created the infamous Comic Sans font in 1994 to be used in the speech bubbles of a cartoon dog designed to help people navigate Windows 95. He noticed that formal, traditional fonts like Times New Roman looked completely ridiculous coming out of a friendly animated dog, so he based his new typeface on the lettering found in Batman and Watchmen comic books. He never intended for it to become a default system font, let alone the go-to choice for passive-aggressive office kitchen signs, poorly designed restaurant menus, and unhinged neighborhood watch flyers. Despite being universally despised by graphic designers and typography snobs across the globe, it remains one of the most widely used and instantly recognizable fonts in human history, proving that bad taste will always triumph over professional design principles
