If you write the dictionary, you hold the ultimate power of censorship. When Samuel Johnson compiled his legendary 1755 Dictionary of the English Language, he intentionally left out words that he thought were annoying. He famously refused to include the word 'bang' because he considered it a low, unscholarly term. He literally weaponized a reference book to enforce his own pretentious vocabulary preferences on the entire British Empire.
