Rejection hurts, but wealthy poets have a uniquely permanent way of biting back. After his manuscript 'No Thanks' was rejected by fourteen different publishers, E.E. Cummings borrowed money from his mother to self-publish it in 1935. He dedicated the book to the fourteen publishing houses that turned him down, literally printing their names in the shape of a funeral urn on the dedication page. It was a masterclass in highly formatted literary pettiness.
