Why big publishers steer clear of poetry

Despite its cultural prestige, traditional publishing conglomerates view poetry as an absolute financial black hole. Because the general public entirely refuses to purchase stanzas, major imprints almost completely ignore the format. The vast majority of working poets are forced to rely on small independent presses or self-publishing avenues just to see their work in print.
